After almost 13 months of waiting and working through the federal 501(c)3 process, My First Bike received the designation in January. “The approval process was painfully slow and extremely backed up” says President Matt Russ. “I wish I could say it did not hinder our fund raising ability, but it did. It really excluded us from large donations and major fund raising efforts. That being said I am very proud of the fact that we were able to raise the funds and hit our distribution goals for 2010. To be able to achieve this with small donations of as little as $25 really demonstrated the power of our grass roots fund raising efforts. Now that we are a federal non-profit we can pursue grants and larger corporate donations that will allow us to help more and more families.”

Thank you to all that attended our Sip Wine tasting event. We greatly exceeded expectations and goals, got to sample some great wine, and had a lot of fun. But the best part of the event was the presentation of a new bike to Taylor Flanagan by the Arasi family. Please view the presentation video.
“Friends from First United Methodist Church of Newnan are mounting a fundraiser this weekend to raise money for the $4,000 bike, which will be specially made for Suzy. Suzy has cerebral palsy and needs a bike with three wheels and a few other modifications to help her ride a bike while dealing with balance issues.”

Born and raised in Baltimore, MD, Steve Mitchell is currently pursuing his graduate work in aerospace engineering at the University of Colorado, Boulder. Steve is a member of the CU triathlon team — living and training in the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains. He shares his time between classes, research, and volunteering with local educational outreach organizations.
Steve’s path to My First Bike (MFB) first started when he was watching Universal Sports’s television coverage of the 2009 Louisville Ironman.
Steve is focusing on Justin Night’s fund raising campaign by training and recruiting sponsors for this June’s Half-Ironman Triathlon in Lawrence, Kansas. The Half Ironman is comprised of a 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike and 13.1 run.

In addition to his campaign, Steve was recognized by his department at CU with a service award which he has graciously donated to MFB.
